Baldwin Advisory believes community involvement is critical to the success of the practice and the development of team members. Founder Shirley Baldwin leads by example. Involved in community activities throughout her career, Shirley has served on numerous not-for-profit boards in the fields of education, social services and the arts. She has assumed varied roles, from finance to fund raising to governance to recruitment and diversity.

Active board experience provides Shirley the knowledge to team with clients, attorneys, community foundations, investment advisors and trust companies to determine the type of charitable organization(s) to fit a family’s goals and objectives. Helping families understand the differences between various charitable organizations from a private foundation to a donor advised fund to a supporting organization, Shirley guides families through the process of implementing the best structure for its unique needs. Post implementation, she and her team facilitate family meetings to discuss and develop mission statements and governance structures.

Shirley currently serves on the boards of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation, the YWCA and the Hermitage Museum and Gardens. Prior board service includes United Way’s Women United, the Chrysler Museum, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Suffolk Cultural Arts Center, American Red Cross and American Heart Association. She has served as chairman of audit committees and has played an active role in development. Presently she is a Tri-Chair of the EVMS Foundation Capital Campaign.
